How does a laser or light based system remove hair?

Laser hair removal utilizes a gentle beam of light that is absorbed through the skin. This light is converted to heat, and is selectively absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. This heat is what destroys the hair in the hair follicle.

How do I know if I am a good candidate?

Since laser and light based hair removal is attracted to pigment, the optimal candidate for laser hair removal is a patient with light skin and dark hair. Your hair needs to have pigment in it in order to achieve good results.

How many treatments does it take?

Hair grows in cycles. The laser and light based hair removal is only effective on hair in the Anagen - active growing phase, where melanin is most abundant. This means that a series of treatments at appropriate intervals are absolutely necessary for the best results. Between 6 to 0 treatments at 4-6 week intervals are usually successful in permanent hair removal.

Will all the hair be gone?

Most lasers and light sources are FDA cleared for permanent hair reduction. It does not necessary imply the elimination of all hairs in the treatment area. Laser does not remove all hair, but removes pigmented hair, usually leaving one with very fine hair that is nearly invisible. Maintenance treatments may be needed over time to maintain the degree of hair loss.

Is the treatment painful?

The laser and light system used at Sky Med Spa uses a cooling device for patient comfort and safety. Most patients describe the treatment as a series of slight pin pricks or rubber band snaps. The majority of patients tolerate this sensation without anesthetics. After the treatment the area might turn pink and you may feel a slight sun burn effect. It may stay pink or red for a few hours to two days depending on your skin’s sensitivity.

What do I need to do before the treatment?

You must stop plucking or waxing your hair for several weeks prior to the laser hair removal treatment for it to be effective. In addition, avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self tanners for 4-6 weeks before treatment. Shave the area to be treated 24-48 hours prior to your treatment.

What restrictions or precautions do I have after the treatment?

You can resume normal activities following your laser procedure, however excessive sweating the day of your treatment and next day may irritate your skin. Be gentle to the treated area for the next several days. And avoid sun, tanning beds and self tanners in between treatments. Furthermore, remember you may not tweeze or wax in between treatments.

Facial Electrolysis

Electrolysis is performed by removing one hair at a time by inserting a very small needle into each hair follicle and applying an electrical current through the needle, cauterizing the follicle. A single hair may need multiple treatments before destroying it. Electrolysis can be performed on any color hair. It can be an alternative treatment if laser is not an option or if the hair has no pigment. Electrolysis is great for shaping eyebrows since you only treat one hair at a time. In addition it is great for thin blonde vellus hair on the upper lip or the coarse white hair on the chin that laser can’t treat.
